What is the Belgian eID card?
|
The Belgian electronic identity card has the format of a regular bank card, with printed basic identity information in visual format, such as personal details and a photograph. The eID card has also a chip containing extended identity information and two digital certificates.
The eID remains above all other features the official proof of one's identity, but makes remote electronic identification possible, with regular identification on the one hand, and authentication on the other hand (by which the actual proof about the identity of the cardholder is being delivered). Another feature for every card holder is the possibility to sign electronic documents with a legally binding signature.
