What is an electronic signature?

Any entity which wants to electronically sign needs a signing key pair, one private key for signing and one public key used by anybody to verify the electronic signature made with the corresponding private signing key.

The digital certificate is a signed statement issued by a known Trusted Authority, a Certification Authority, to certify the link between the electronic public key and the identity of its owner, which is assumed to be the only the entity to able to know or use the corresponding private signing key.

Digital signatures can provide major important functions such as: authentication confidentiality, data integrity and non-repudiation.
