Are the eID digital certificates standard digital certificates?

The eID Digital certificates are standard digital certificates conform the international standard ISO X509v3. With these certificates persons can sign electronic documents electronically and identify themselves when executing electronic transactions.
These certificates are also suitable for identification of e-Gov applications and for private purposes (registered electronic mails, signed mails, ...), authentication through webbrowsers (e-Banking, e-Contracting,…), etc.
